On Saturday the 4th of May, the Reading interfaith women’s group met to exchange experiences about fasting. It was lovely to meet new people and catch up with friends.
Those of us who are Muslim are preparing for the holy month of Ramadan. The days are long at this time of year, so it’s not going to be easy. But at the same time, it’s ‘mind over matter’ and it teaches you patience. It also helps you to understand how other people feel, who struggle to find enough food.
Getting together as a community is an important part of Ramadan, as is giving of your wealth to others. Spiritually, it brings you closer to God.
This is similar to Christian fasting during Lent, where Christians take a step back from the world to spend more time with God. They remember Jesus’ suffering, and also think of people who are less fortunate. The way in which they do this is very much up to the individual, for example giving up luxury foods.
We enjoyed our time together, and we’re looking forward to the next session. The date & location for June will be decided soon!
